What's In Store For 2004?

I can't say why, but I have this feeling, deep in my heart, that 2004 is going to be a great year, right from the start. 2003, was dicey and wild, but 2004 is going to be mild. Okay, that's enough rhyming. I'm sitting here on New Year's Eve day, looking out my back yard window into our lovely, peaceful, backyard, at the orange trees, heavy with fruit, and the squirrels and crows going about their business, with two sets of jammies on, and a rested mind form our recent trip to San Francisco, and a belly full of German food from last night, and it's hard to imagine that anything could be wrong in this world.

Wait! I take it back! I just went to get a cup of coffee, and when I went to pour it, it was darn near clear! And then I noticed hot water running all over the counter top with floating coffee grounds going this way and that! Seems I didn't manage to completely close the coffee compartment, so I didn't get complete coffee, and had to start the process all over again. Such problems, tsk tsk.

But really, I wonder what is in store for 2004? Will there be another war? Will the Dow Jones go up, or will it stay lower? Will my son's soccer tournament team win it's game, will my weight go down, or just stay the same? Oh wait, I'm rhyming again! Better go try for that coffee one more time. Ahhhhhh, there we go.

I love January. It gives me the feeling of being baptized from duties. All the fuss of the holidays comes to a screeching halt. The twins have just about wrapped up their science fair projects. Oh, did I say the twins? Was it their projects or mine? Sometimes it's hard to remember. And now it's just soccer All-Star games, getting back on the exercise track at the gym, and continuing on my quest to earn 50K a year working 20 hours a week. Any suggestions anyone? The next few things coming up are my birthday, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, no fuss no muss. It's easy street until July! Well, for me at least.

My better half has been doing his best to hang on

to his career. Some days the outlook is grand, and other days it is grim. I'm just trying to take it one day at a time, and make the best of it. It got so wild before Christmas, that I got down to a one minute schedule. I finally, for the first time in nearly thirty years, gave up reading the L.A. Times. I just couldn't fit it in. It's killing me wondering what I've missed. However, I did get a chance on our holiday to start the novel 'Tis, by Frank McCourt, which I've had in my possession for I don't know how many years, and I am enjoying it thoroughly. I figure if I only get an hour to read each day, may as well make it count. You know it's a good book when you choose to forego sleep to read just one more chapter.

Now, I've just got to get those Thank Yous out, and put the birthdays on the 2004 calendar. I think I can handle that. I've got a book waiting for me so tootles!

One step at a time!

It may be that those who do most, dream most.
-  Stephen Leacock

He who has no desires has no sorrow, but where there is desire
There will be ever-increasing sorrows.

When desire, sorrow's sorrow, dies away,
Undying bliss prevails even here on earth.

It is the nature of desire never to be fulfilled, but he who utterly
Gives it up realizes eternal fulfillment at that very moment.
-Tirukkural 37: 368-370

If you scatter thorns, don't go barefoot.
-  Italian Proverb

It is better to have less if it is with peace of mind than to have abundant wealth but with a tormented spirit.
- Ecclesiastes

Three things restore a person's good spirits: beautiful sounds, sights, and smells.
- Babylonian Talmud, Berakhot 57b

All we have to decide is what to do with the time we are given.
-  Gandalf to Frodo, The Fellowship of the Ring

If a friend is in trouble, don't annoy him by asking if there is anything you can do. Think up something appropriate and do it.
-  Edgar Watson Howe

Nothing gives one person so much advantage over another as to remain always cool and unruffled under all circumstances.
-  Thomas Jefferson

It is human to think wisely and act in an absurd fashion.
-  Anatole France

Even more wretched than a learned man's poverty
Is the unlearned man's wealth.

Though humbly born, a learned man's nobility
Transcends that of the unlearned noble man.
-Tirukkural 41: 408-409

When the student is ready, the teacher appears.
-  Tao saying

Strength is the capacity to break a chocolate bar into four pieces with your bare hands--and then just eat one of the pieces.
-  Judith Viorst

Man’s heart away from nature becomes hard.
-  Standing Bear

If I try to be like him, who will be like me?
- Yiddish Proverb

The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek.
-  Joseph Campbell

Expecting the world to treat you fairly because you are a good person is like expecting the bull not to charge you because you are a vegetarian.

Too many people overvalue what they are not and undervalue what they are.

A man wrapped up in himself makes a very small bundle.
