You Can't Miss What You Never Had

In keeping with the theme of Gratitude for this month of November, I mused upon what it means to feel gratitude. For me, it is the recognition of all that I have experienced, both good and bad, which has shaped me into the person that I am. The people in my life, both the family to whom I was born into, married into, and the friends and loved ones who have come into my life. My surroundings, living in my wonderful house in Los Angeles, far removed from hurricanes and snowstorms and Malaria. My economic security- never have I ever had to go hungry or not had a safe place to lay my head at night. My health, no serious issues to date, and I am at the half-century mark. My job- lucky to be where I am doing what I enjoy. My freedom. I can say what I like and wear what I like and talk to the people I like to talk with and cast my vote and read what I like, etc. My wonderful pets which bring such joy. All of the amusements open to me- the internet, movies, dining and shopping and spending time with friends and family. I am very grateful for all of this. I would miss any of these God- given gifts were I to lose them which got me to musing about the concept that we cannot miss what we have never experienced.

For example, if I had never experienced swimming in the ocean, I would not "miss" doing this. Chances are that it would never cross my mind. If I had never eaten warm bread pudding, I wouldn't search for it on dessert menus. If I had never loved fully, I would not know what that experience would be like in order to miss it. If I had never had time to sit in front of a blank computer screen and fill it with my random musings, I would not be frustrated when I cannot find the time to do it.

It is an odd thing to think about. We each have our own unique experience in our existence on this planet. Some of us are born into opportunity and opulence and others into struggle and strife. I think of the life experiences of those more and less fortunate than I. Would a person in Sudan get irritated because she missed her TV show? I think not, because she doesn't have that experience to miss.

As I write this, my dog is looking at me with the longing in his eyes to go for his walk as we do nearly every day. I haven't taken him yet because I had some things to do first- like write this blog before I lose access to the computer. I wonder how much he knows. Is he really thinking about his walk? Or am I the one missing it? If we had never taken that first walk then neither of us would have the capacity of missing it. I am missing alying on the couch and reading the newspaper. I never should have done that in the first place. Or eaten that warm bread pudding. Nah. I'd rather have as many experiences as I can and keep them for wonderful souvenirs. The secret is to be content where you are and to live each moment to the fullest, not expecting it to be something else.

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Cheater Recipe I was going to bake the real ones and then arrived home to realize I didn't have enough flour or enough time to go and buy more as company was coming. I had already purchased my Butterscotch morsels so I decided to take a chance and see what happened if I tried this, and it worked:

Blondie Brownies

1 box yellow cake mix

1 stick melted butter

1 16 oz bag Butterscotch pieces

3 eggs

Mix it all together and put into a grease 9 x 13 pan. Cook at 350 for 30 minutes or until golden brown.

May the best man win the Presidency of the United States this Tuesday!
