Friendship

I couldn't think of a more fitting topic for the month of December than the topic of friendship. December is a month when many of us take time to take stock of our personal relationships and attempt to communicate our love with gifts, gatherings, and greeting cards. We reach out to people we do not see on a regular basis and to those we spend time with often. It's a fun, festive, frenetic time of year. It got me to thinking about the concept of friendship. What exactly is it that causes a friendship to develop? Is it simply a matter of shared interests, values and schedules? Or is it more than that? What causes us to form bonds with some folks yet not with others? I think it comes down to a mutual feeling of understanding. That feeling of connection when for a magical moment, you feel as though someone else really gets where you are coming from or going to or through for that matter, and you no longer feel alone.

A true friendship can work mathematical miracles- it divides sorrow while doubling joy all at the same time. It's that special someone you want to call after you've seen a really touching movie or read an interesting book, just so you can get their take on it. That someone you can call when your are up or down or when you need good honest advice regarding a matter you are too close to. That friend who can tell you that yes, the black pants are more flattering than the white ones. The one who brings you a sample of Truffle Salt in a baggy because she knows you have never tried it but will love it in your mashed potatoes. The one who offers to come to your home and heat up all of your food for your guests while you are attending your twins' graduation and hosting 50 people for dinner immediately afterwards. The friend that drove to 15 pharmacies trying to obtain a can of numbing spray ( which the manufacturer ran completely out of ) after the deposition from hell. The one who comes to your house to take loving care of all of your pets whenever you are gone. The one who really listens and is actually interested in what you have to say.

I'm finding that as I grow older, I simply value the people whom I feel comfortable being with. The ones where I can just say what is on my mind without having to worry that they will take my comments personally, or take offense when none was intended. Not that I am often misunderstood but there are certain people with whom I feel I can be myself with fewer filters, we appreciate the same things in life. Friends bring such joy. They bring significance to our existence.

Take my dog Bubba for example. He is a great friend. He loves me unconditionally. Thinks that everything I cook is super fantastic. Never complains if I haven't showered or my hair is frizzy. He's always happy to see me and listens intently whenever I speak. Okay, I'll admit that I am joking here, but I often wonder what he'd be like if he were a person. So attentive and trusting and fun loving. Interested and interesting. Always up for a good adventure or a shared meal. Loyal and protective. These are all grand qualities of a fabulous friend, but he cannot ponder the mysteries of the universe with me. Or prepare the perfect custard cream puff and present it to me. He can't offer to drive when I am too tired or lend me $10 bucks when I am running short on funds.

I had such a good time gathering up the friendship quotes for the sidebars. Some were very familiar, but some were new to me. So many wise words from others who also contemplated the concept of friendship. It is different from the bonds of familial or romantic love. It lacks the obligation and infatuation aspects. WE are born into our families, but we choose our friends. Friendship is like the comfortable pair of shoes which are not made to impress others, but simply to best help you get from here to there. Some friendships take many years to fully blossom while others catch on like a match to gasoline. Some friendships endure forever and others are short and sweet. Your best buddy who lived across the street and remained close to for life. High School friends who continue to keep in touch. The woman you looked forward to talking with at your children's' gymnastic class and never saw again once the class was over. The coworker in Missouri who you bared your soul to and then they left the company and you never heard from them again.

Of course Facebook has had quite an impact on our friendships. We can reunite with old friends who we thought we would never be able to communicate with again. We can click a few buttons to let them know we are thinking about them, or start a random chat in the middle of the workday. As humans many of us have a seemingly constant yearning for connection and interaction. We don't want to go it alone. We want to be heard and understood, and we want to learn from and also to teach others. We want to be entertained. We want to feel trusted and that we can trust. Appreciated and that we can appreciate. Cared for and that we can care for. And on that note, I am signing off so that I can go address those Christmas cards.

Merry Christmas to all and to all a Good Night!
