Listen My Children and You Shall Hear

2011- another year closer to Heaven..... Tick- tock, yeah don't stop.. When I was a child I remember long lazy summer days. One rolling out from the other, with no set plan or pending oligations. All I had to do was to get up, make my bed, and entertain myself. There was always a good book to read, clay to mold, a walk to take, a game to play, time to look at the clouds and ponder their shapes. Time to really look at the pansies in our front yard and marvel at the beauty of their color combinaitons. I had no idea then what a rare treat this was. I thought my life was somewhat boring. I thought I might like to take piano lessons or be involved with the social clique- which I was clearly not a part of. But looking back on it now, I wouldn't change one single thing- except maybe the piano lessons. But we didn't have a piano anyway.

I didn't feel the pinch for free time until I moved out on my own and worked three jobs while going to college full time. That was nuts. I was not happy- just busy. Life is like that. There are the slow dances and the slam dances. And then there are the waltzes. I'd like to think that I am waltzing right now. I have come to realize that I cannot do it all. Can't read every book that appeals to me, not watch every movie, not see every play, nor keep in contact with all those who I hold dear. It would be like trying to do everything and accomplishing nothing. I have learned that if I want to talk to someone, I can call them and they might not have time to talk to me, and that is okay. And that I don't have to finish a book that bores me before I can begin reading a new book that intrigues. I can eat dessert before dinner if I want. I'd like to say that I am living my life with a lot less "shoulds". It's a lot more enjoyable this way, though the house is not as tidy.

I was going to try to pull together a last minute column summing up the big news stories of 2010 and listing popular predictions for 2011- but I couldn't find any good data, and besides, I just didn't have the time to put something like that together. I trust my readers have a good grip on the iPads and oil spills, earthquakes, floods, and volcano eruptions. I don't need to cop out and rehash it here. I'd prefer to blather on about concepts like the passing of time, and setting priorities, and what I hear when I simply listen.

I have spent some time recently on one of my favorite pastimes- reading my inspirational books, walking my dog to the CSUN Koi Pond, and pondering what it might be like to be the rock that receives the waterfall flow. Or what it might be like to be the water itself. Looking at the lotus flower and realizing that it does not have to strive to be a better lotus flower, or a thinner lotus flower, or a lotus flower in a different part of the pond. It just is, and it is a miracle that a tiny seed and the correct conditions can produce such a beautiful flower. The koi swim and the ducks quack and they seem so comfortable with their station in life. Who am I to think that I am any different? Did I not come from a "seed" of a sort and have been exisiting in favorable conditions? I would like to think so. I don't know what's in store any more than that lotus flower knows when it's going to rain next. All I have to do is to be and not waste my energy judging myself - or others for that matter-as to what kind of job we are doing simply being.

But this is not a natural state of mind for me. If I don't watch myself, I catch myself considering the hair styles and noticing the coughing of the people around me during Mass instead of really hearing the words being spoken. Or missing out on the present moment because I am planning the next- when I am not even in a hurry. Not really tasting lunch because I am mentally preparing dinner. Hearing a stupid song over and over when I am walking my dog. This seems to be my natural state. My goal for 2011 is to work on changing this, at least for some of the time.

So when I am just being- and listening, what do I hear? After the chatter of the judging self quiets? After I crack my neck and scratch my leg? And zero in on the buzzing of nearby electronics? I can't really say right now. It's been a while since I have practiced. But what I do know is that I usually enjoy the rest of the day.

I think it's a great way to recharge. If we are always processing information - visual, auditory, sensory, when do we recharge? When we sleep? I don't know about you, but I don't wake up perky. I wake up trying for the life of me to figure out what might have caused me to dream the crazy dreams I dreamt. Watching TV or reading a book is like letting my brain be pulled along in a wagon. It doesn't have to do any work, but it is still in motion. Only when I take a moment to do nothing ( see how we have to have that "do" word in there?) can I attempt to quiet my mind. No shoulds, no planning, no worrying, no wanting- just sit there like that lotus flower and be.

I think that two of my four children get in this state from time to time. I catch them gazing off with a far away look. No TV on- no computer, no radio or ipod or ipad or open book. I ask them what they are thinking about and their reply is always "nothing". The other two seem to panic during these moments. They don't like to be alone. They hate a quiet car ride or house. They are always inputting- TV, Radio, Computer, iPod, telephone, or organizing in their minds. What might they hear if they stopped inputting and just listened?

Sorry Yogi- no new recipe this month. too busy eating out : o)
